Summary

The jury members will have the delicate task of choosing among the competing films and bestowing 18 official awards, including the Cristal for short films and the Cristal for feature films.

  • Yoshihiro Shimizu
    Yoshihiro Shimizu

    Producer, Japan

    Biography

    Yoshihiro Shimizu officially joined Tezuka Productions in 1981, as Production Manager.

    After working on projects such as Bander Book (TV), Marine Express (TV) and Phoenix 2772 (movie), he gradually moved up the ranks to become Production Director in 1989.

    He has produced several animations including the features Black Jack, Jungle Emperor, TV series Astro Boy, Phoenix and Black Jack in addition to acting as Creative Consultant for the movie Astro Boy.

    He has also produced various international Osamu Tezuka exhibitions. He was the former Chairman of the Business Committee of the Association of Japanese Animations and has been General Manager of Tezuka Productions since 1999.

     
  • Mathias Malzieu
    Mathias Malzieu

    Director, France

    Biography

    Mathias Malzieu was born in 1974 in Montpellier.

    Following an aborted career as a tennis player and having abandonned his cinema studies for music, he became a prominent figure of French rock with the group Dionysos, for whom he writes, composes and interpretes songs.

    A thrill seeker (longboard, surfing and bungee jumping), he was propelled onto the scene thanks, in part, to his impressive live shows.

    Little inclined to choose between his dual careers as a wild singer and a quirky writer he naturally decided to combine the two, writing a short story collection, 38 mini westerns (avec des fantômes), a moving autobiographical novel, Maintenant qu’il fait tout le temps nuit sur toi, then The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart – which received critical acclaim and was released in 20 different countries – as well as his eponymous original comic book, which will be made into a film in stereoscopic 3D animation film in 2012, co-directed with Stéphane Berla and produced by Luc Besson.

     
  • Marc Du Pontavice
    Marc Du Pontavice

    Producer, France

    Biography

    Chief Executive Officer for Xilam Animation and Chairman for the SPFA (Union of French Animated Films Producers), Marc Du Pontavice began his career with Gaumont, where he co-founded Gaumont TV (1991-1995) before creating Gaumont Multimédia in 1995.

    In 1999 he created Xilam Animation, which bought out Gaumont Multimédia and established itself as one of the leading animation producers by achieving global success with Space Goofs, Oggy and the Cockroaches and almost 200 hours of animation, as well as two feature films; Kaena, the Prophecy and Go West, A Lucky Luke Adventure. He is also co-founder and president of One World films, known for the success of its live-action film Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque), which was directed by Joann Sfar and won 3 César in 2011.

  • Aleksandra Korejwo
    Aleksandra Korejwo

    Director, Poland

    Biography

    Animated film director, painter, scriptwriter, animator and producer, Aleksandra Korejwo graduated with distinction in Animated Film Directing from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, Poland. She lectured at the Department of Psychophysiology of Perception and Visual Structures at the Academy of Fine Art in Poznań for several years and has also spent her time creating artistic and advertising films in Poland and abroad.

    Her films have been shown and awarded prizes all over the world and have received a total of approximately 50 awards, distinctions and nominations at domestic and international festivals, such as The Swan set to music by Camille Saint-Saens (Grand Prix at the International Film Festival in Shanghai).

    She has been a member of the jury at many international animation films festivals including Lucca, Madrid and Annecy.

    Biography

    PEShas earned global recognition for his innovative short films that use everyday objects and stop motion to create an original storytelling medium.

    Other successes include KaBoom! and Game Over, along with Western Spaghetti, which was named #2 Viral Video of the Year by Time Magazine and won the Audience Award at Annecy in 2009. His talents likewise stretch into advertising, where he has directed dozens of commercials for international brands such as Playstation, Scrabble, Bacardi, Washington State Lottery, Sneaux Shoes, Nike, and Coinstar.

    He has also been featured in a wide variety of publications and venues, including The New York Times, Wired Magazine, the front pages of YouTube in 22 countries, and the Guggenheim Museum.

     
  • Regina Pessoa
    Regina Pessoa

    Director, Portugal

    Biography

    Regina Pessoa was born in Portugal in 1969.

    "I lived in the countryside in a small village till I was 17 years old and we didn't have television, which was very boring... today, in retrospect, maybe that saved me because we read and listened to our elders telling stories."

    She studied Painting at Porto University of Fine Arts and worked on a number of animation films.

    In 1999, she made her own first film, The Night, using the technique of engraving on plaster plates.

    Her second animated engraving short, Tragic Story with Happy Ending followed in 2005, and was rewarded with the Annecy Cristal in 2006. She is currently working on her 3rd short, Kali le petit vampire, once again using the engraving technique, but this time digital.

    "When I was little, my uncle used to draw on the walls and doors of my grandmother's home with pieces of charcoal. This gave us a sense of freedom because we didn’t have paper and pencils but we always had walls and doors – maybe this stayed with me unconsciously because now, much later, I'm making films using engraving."

  • Tapaas Chakravarti
    Tapaas Chakravarti

    Producer, India

    Biography

    Tapaas Chakravarti founded DQ Entertainment, the animation powerhouse of which he is CEO, in 1997.

    The company has produced numerous global animations including commissions such as Mickey Mouse Club House, The Penguins of Madagascar as service and coproductions such as Little Prince, Iron Man, Little Nick, Casper and several others.
    It has to its credit several prestigious awards including Emmys, a Pulcinella and Gemini Awards.

    Recently voted one of Asia’s Top 100 Technology Companies, it won the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 India programmes in 2006 and 2007. The company was recently recognised as the best performing iTES company in the state of A.P. India.

    He is Chairman of the Animation and Gaming forum at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), and was recognised as Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005 by HMA.

    In 2007 he received an Emmy for his work as Executive Producer on Tutenstein, and was recently elected as a member of the board. In addition, he supports several global charitable organisations working for orphans, AIDS affected children and education for the underprivileged.

     
  • Laurence Blaevoet
    Laurence Blaevoet

    Head of Youth Programmes CANAL+, France

    Biography

    After studying at l'École supérieure de journalisme in Paris (French School of Journalism), Laurence Blaevoet began her career as a journalist at RTL-Télévision.

    In 1985, she joined TMC channel as a deputy director of programming before moving to CANAL+ programming department in 1990. She then took part in CANAL+ HORIZONS launch in Senegal and Tunisia.

    In 1995, she returned to the CANAL+ programming department where she became director in 2000. In 2010, she was appointed Director of the Youth unit of the CANAL+ group, succeeding François Deplanck.

     
  • Lucineh Kassarjian
    Lucineh Kassarjian

    Artistic Director, Armenia

    Biography

    Lucineh Kassarjian was born in 1973 and began her career in 1992 as product manager for multilingual virtual museums.

    In 2003, using her academic skills in Education and Computer Arts/New Media, she founded Molorak Arts, a company specialising in children’s digital products bridging art and technology and stressing on multicultural/multilingual aspects.

    She has also worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, and has taught Computer Education at the KZV Armenian School in San Francisco.

    In 2008 she joined ReAnimania's launch team as Artistic Director with Festival Director Vrej Kassouny, and since then has been responsible for the festival's development, including programme, film and jury selection, marketing, PR and government relations, as well as representing ReAnimania in several international festivals, such as Annecy, Stuttgart, Dubai and Cannes.

  • Matthew O'Callaghan
    Matthew O'Callaghan

    Director, USA

    Biography

    Acclaimed director and animator Matthew O'Callaghan most recently worked on three original 3D theatrical Warner Bros. Cartoons, featuring the classic Looney Tunes characters Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. The first of these, Coyote Falls, was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Short Film (Animated) and was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject.

    O'Callaghan's previous work includes directing the animated feature Curious George and DVD films Open Season 2 and Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas, as well as creating and working as executive producer on the TV series The Itsy Bitsy Spider (based on his theatrical short starring Jim Carrey) and Life with Louie, with comic Louie Anderson. His previous credits as an animator, artist or computer animation supervisor include the films The Little Mermaid, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 102 Dalmatians, Inspector Gadget and Touchstone's Mission to Mars.

     
  • David Sproxton
    David Sproxton

    Producer, Great Britain

    Biography

    David Sproxton is the co-founder and Executive Chairman of Aardman Animations, created in 1972, and has served as a producer, director or cinematographer on a number of animated projects with the studio.

    He co-produced Aardman’s first feature film Chicken Run (2000), the Wallace and Gromit feature The Curse of the Wererabbit (2005) and the CGI feature Flushed Away (2006), which was made in association with DreamWorks.

    He is currently involved both in the development of further feature films in association with Sony Pictures, and in many of the studio's TV projects.

    He is the chairman of Encounters Festival (Bristol's celebration of the short film) and a board member of the National Film and Television School. In 2006, David and his co-founder, Peter Lord, celebrated the company's 30th birthday by being awarded CBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

     
  • Will Vinton
    Will Vinton

    Biography

    After studying physics and media studies, Will Vinton experimented with different animation methods before creating claymation in 1975, a technique he has used throughout his entire career.

    In 1976, he created Will Vinton Production (which later became Will Vinton Studios), which produced commercials, TV series, short films and features including the world's first claymation feature The Adventures of Mark Twain.

    These productions were highly acclaimed and the studio became well-known for its talent in creating iconic characters. Will Vinton thereafter introduced real actors into the mix such as Return to Oz, international version.

    At the end of the 90s, Will Vinton undertook a new challenge: that of producing a quality TV series on a budget. The PJ's achieved this goal. In 2003, Will Vinton left his studio to create Freewill Entertainment and go back to his roots. He is currently developping animated features projects including The Minstrel Tree and The Quest.
