Feature Animation with Jason Ryan, 1st session

  1. Overview
  2. Description

First session: Concept to Blocking

Jason Ryan has been working in the industry for over 18 years. After a stint at Walt Disney Animation Studios he is now a Supervising Animator at DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, California.
The aim of these workshops is to allow both professionals and students to observe Jason's approach to animation.

Originally a 2D animator, he uses the speed of drawing in DigiCel Flipbook to create a blueprint for his shots, which helps solve his character's posing, spacing, and timing.
Once the blueprint is working Jason uses it as a reference layer inside Maya, to help create the CG character's performance.
This process saves him endless hours of struggling with rigs and has made him one of the fastest animators in the industry today.
1) Concept to Blocking
In the first session, Jason will talk about his creative process, rough in the blue print and start to block the shot in Maya.
