Women and Animation – The Girlfriends

  1. Overview
  2. Description
  3. Films

Annecy 2015 wanted to pay tribute to all the women who have helped to change attitudes and promote female expression in the world of animation. This programme assembles a collection of films that simply can't be summed up with a single theme.

Women are taking over a vast and fertile territory in animation. With a title that makes reference to Antonioni, this programme offers a brief glimpse into the worlds of some legendary female filmmakers (Caroline Leaf, Joan Gratz) and some younger prodigies (Niki Lindroth Von Bahr, Inès Sedan and Vessela Dantcheva).

Here, you can discover:

  • Sidewalk by Celia Bullwinkel, with almost 2 million views online;
  • One Day by Marie Paccou, the filmmaker's first film that became an instant classic.
  • The Last Time by Candy Kugel, a heartfelt tribute to her colleague Vincent Cafareli and a great example of autobiographical influence that is found throughout women's animation.
  • Five Rooms by Ursula Ferrara, one of the most unique voices in Italian animation.
  • Papa by Jelena Girlin and Mari-Liis Bassovskaja, two leading contributors at the Nukufilm Studios.
