Jean-Paul Mathelier’s documentary Le Rêveur éveillé, about writer and filmmaker Jean-François Laguionie will be screened as part of the tribute to French animation.

Jean-Paul Mathelier’s documentary Le Rêveur éveillé is all about writer and filmmaker Jean-François Laguionie, whose animated features include The Painting and A Monkey’s Tale, and who is presenting his latest opus, Louise, at the Festival this year.

The meeting between the two filmmakers took place in the house-studio of Jean-François Laguionie, aka "the wakeful dreamer", which is also the title of the documentary. This is the place that holds the memories of the past, the current work in progress and the future of the film in development. At its heart, in rhythm with the tides, Laguionie’s poetic imagination takes shape.

An in-depth account of a storyteller who uses animation to bring his stories to life.

The book Le Cinéma d’animation en 100 films is due to be launched 16th June, but you’ll be able to take a premiere at the Annecy Festival the day before, as it’ll be the introduction to the screening of the documentary Le Rêveur éveillé and La Traversée de l’Atlantique.

Coordinated Xavier Kawa-Topor and Philippe Moins and published by Capricci, the book is a chronological tour of films that have made a mark on the animation scene and will be presented in-person by Xavier Kawa-Topor.
