The Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its Market continue to grow, and this year reach 11,700 Badgeholders!

Annecy International Animation Film Festival (11th – 16th June 2018)

This 2018 edition of the Annecy Festival has once again beaten all the records, solidly confirming its importance for professionals, students and animation enthusiasts alike. The number of Badgeholders has broken the 10,000 threshold and this year saw an astonishing 11,700 people arriving in Annecy from 88 different countries. The number of films accepted for submission for the official selection also increased, reaching 3,086 submissions from 93 countries, with a record of 97 feature films. Ultimately 220 were selected for competition.

There were 10 feature films in competition and 15 outside competition, and each and every one attracted an audience. The feature from Denis Do, Funan, received the prestigious Cristal Award for a Feature film. The spotlight also goes onto the triple reward for The Breadwinner by Nora Twomey, who left Annecy most notably with the Jury Award and the Audience Award/Première. Among the 130 short films official selection, Bloeistraat 11, by Nienke Deutz, triumphed with the Cristal for a Short Film.

The homage to Brazilian animation, coupled with a theme devoted to "Music and animation film" gave rhythm and colour to the event. Exhibitions, Special Screenings, Concert Films, Musical Performances, Jury members, Territory Focus, Sound Creation Workshops, Masterclasses, punctuated the week and placed these themes in the spotlight. Brazil was represented at the Mifa by a delegation of 54 companies with a 45m² stand.

The Screening Events attracted the crowds throughout the event, among which was Dilili in Paris, presented at the opening ceremony, Incredibles 2, Hotel Transylvania 3, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck it Ralph 2, and the short films Bird Karma, Bao, Bilby, Dreamland, Belly Flop and Gertie the Dinosaur.

And Screening Events means the red carpet! This year the Festival welcomed celebrated names from the animation world, directors, musicians and voices, such as Michel Ocelot, Dean DeBlois, Genndy Tartakovsky, Richard Williams, Brad Bird, Zabou Breitman, Golshifteh Farahani, Bérénice Béjo, Mamoru Hosoda, Eric Neveu, Dominique A, Sébastien Laudenbach, Mark Osborne, Emilie Loizeau, Pénélope Bagieu, Alê Abreu, Claude Baras…

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival already invites you to mark your calendar for the 2019 edition, from 10th to 15th June and Japanese animation shall be the honored guest.

The International Film Animation Market (from 12th to 16th June 2018)

The Annecy International Film Animation Market also beat the records. Its surface area increased to 7,321 m², where 3,800 badgeholders assembled, equaling an increase of 22%, 1,736 companies were present (+20%), 490 buyers, distributers and investors (+12%) and 75 countries represented.

New mediums were used this year and they immediately found their audience and niche: Market Screenings, Shoot the Book Anim’, Demo Sessions, Meet the Composers. Also for the first time, a new collective "Creative Europe MEDIA".

The second edition of the Mifa Campus, a day that enables meetings between students and young talents with animation professionals, confirmed once again the undeniable interest of these different sessions. This year’s mentor was the celebrated Richard Williams.

For the first time, the video library was openly accessible proving to be an astounding success with more than 25,300 files of films consulted and more than 4,400 videos watched. Also a record for the Mifa Pitches with 468 projects submitted and during the 75 recruitment sessions, 920 candidates were welcomed. 60 studios took part, including Illumination MacGuff, Pixar, Cube Creative, On Kids and Family, TeamTO, and many more.

At the time of the announcement of the public broadcasting reform, the Mifa was also a platform for expressing the fears of the actors of the profession and the organizations that represent them.

And, for the first time ever, the Mifa Animation Industry Award was rewarded to an organization, the Women in Animation (WIA) association, confirming Annecy’s commitment for equality at the heart of organizations.

For 2019 the dates for the Annecy International Animation Film Market are chosen! Rendezvous from Tuesday 11th to Friday 14th June 2019.

Meetings (11th to 15th June 2019)

For the third consecutive year the Meetings at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival confirms their importance. This year we counted the presence of 157 international experts, and 42 meeting sessions on the subject of animation, 15 behind the scenes rendezvous and professionals coming from 87 different countries to represent this creative industry.

The Masterclasses were in majority held by Duke Johnson and Dino Stamatopoulos (Starburns Industries), the Festival’s honored guests, Masaaki Yuasa, Eric Neveu… Carlos Saldanha presented a Making of about his last feature film Ferdinand, and Shuzo John Shiota (Polygon Pictures), as well as Andrea Miloro and Robert Baird (20th Century Fox Animation), presented two Keynotes.

Positioned at the heart of the Mifa for the second consecutive year, the 14 conferences were full to overflowing, covering platforms as wide ranging as the OTT, VR, 3D bookshops, music and more.

The Work in Progress sessions affirm the upcoming quality animated feature film releases: The Swallows of Kabul, Spider-Man: New Generation, The Bear’s Famous Invasion of Sicily, Playmobil-The Film, The Crossing

Finally the Studio Focus gathered together the most important players in the animation industry such as, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon Animation, Pixar, Netflix Animation, Cartoon Network, Pearl Studio, Paramount Animation and Google Spotlight Stories.

The Meetings await you next year from Monday 10th to Friday 14th June 2019.

Every year the Festival and Annecy International Film Animation Market attract many international journalists. This year it drew an astonishing 400 journalists.

Thanks to their work covering the event there were over 400 written press articles (local, regional and national), more than 760 topics online on websites and French blogs, more than 20 French agency press releases, more than 35 announcements or reportages on the regional and national television channels, some 60 radio emissions and more than 400 publications internationally.

On the YouTube channel devoted to the Annecy Festival you will discover the partners’ trailer created by TeamTO, the atmospheric film that traces the entirety of the Festival, the Mifa and the Meetings, as well as playlists gathering the Shorts & Breakfast (the winners) live recordings, numerous interviews with the directors present, and with industry professionals (Mifa Extpert Insights), credits were done by the students from GOBELINS, l’école de l’image, Ice Cream Talks.

The Team

Every year, CITIA, the organizers of the Annecy Festival, its Market and it Meetings, significantly increases its payroll to meet the expanding workload related to establishing the event.

For this 2018 edition, additionally to the 32 permanent staff who work on the event throughout the year, there were 79 fixed-term contract staff, 8 long-term trainees and 5 short-term trainees.

But, this edition also notably had the assistance of 375 volunteers covering all the events, 50 individual short-term contractors and more than 200 service providers.
