What would a musically-themed retrospective be like without opera?

Allow the ear to see and the eye to hear! Music in animation is the second theme to be honoured during the 2018 Festival. It was essential for Marcel Jean, artistic director, "to give the chance to composers to speak, allocate them an important place in the Festival programme, and allow the public and professionals to meet each other".

The musical world of animation will thus be explored throughout this week of festivities!

As Marcel Jean points out, "it is ironic to note that the most famous cartoon in the history of animation, What's Opera, Doc?, was inspired by Wagner's opera! On one hand, there are total art works adored by the middle class, and, on the other hand, the other is a type of cinema that has been led astray and is aimed at children". This retrospective made up of eight works will immerse you in a world of absurdity, love, melodrama and revenge. You will thus how discover how some directors, such as Giulio Gianini, Emanuele Luzzati and Barry J.C. Purves, are specialised in animated opera, and how some others have been entirely inspired by opera to make their films. Fascination and chills are guaranteed in this collection of animated films set against the backdrop of opera music!
