After being disturbed by her husband Shiva, Parvati creates Ganesh to protect herself. In his anger, Shiva cuts off Ganesh's head. In order to win Parvati's forgiveness, he replaces the head with that of an elephant and Ganesh goes on to become a great and powerful god.
