In June 2020 CITIA launched the arts residency "Graphic development for animation feature film" to assist creation.
This 2nd Residency reached its end on 30th June 2022.
The Residency
With backing from the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Département de la Haute-Savoie, Drac, CNC and Netflix, as well as TVPaint, Wacom and MSI helping with technical aspects, CITIA, the organisers of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Mifa, wanted to continue supporting animation feature film writers by giving them the time and a place to create, to network, to provide increased visibility, and continuous project support.
The Annecy Festival Residency provides a tailor-made offer to each of the selected projects, in an inspiring and stimulating ecosystem, as well as connecting with esteemed mentors in the animation sector.

Call for applications 2023
While the Annecy Festival Residency 2022 will draw to a close on 30th June, it is already time to apply to benefit from this support in 2023!
The Annecy Festival Residency is dedicated to animation feature films and will welcome 3 new projects in April 2023. For 3 months they will benefit from a working environment conducive to exploration (at The Papeteries – Image Factory), tailor-made mentoring, and assistance from the CITIA teams to be able to develop their projects’ graphic universe.

The 2022 call for projects
Following the call for projects in June 2022, 30 projects were submitted, 11 of which led by women, from 19 countries. In addition to the geographical diversity, this 2nd edition has revealed a variety of styles and genres, as well as less focus on projects for young audiences.
Therefore, it is among the committed and engaging projects leaning towards teen-adults that the consensus was reached by the selection committee comprising: Sara Wikler (Artistic Film Producer, Blue Spirit, Script Consultant), Damien Brunner (Producer, Folivari), Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec (Director), Laurence Petit (Distributor, Haut et Court) and Jérémy Clapin (Director).
The Advisory Committee brought together Catherine Puthod (Head of Film, Audiovisual and New Media, Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), Éloïse Braets (Head of the Territorial Cultural Development Unit, Département de la Haute-Savoie) as well as Marie Le Gac (Head of Development, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Cinéma).
The winning projects in 2022
A member from each of the three projects will be hosted in Annecy by CITIA to join this second Annecy Festival Residency from 4th April to 30th June 2022.
- Deep Fake by Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis (France).
The story about a fictious virtual world, also known as a metaverse, in which Amy, a YouTuber artist who makes her living by doing ASMR performance videos. But her popularity is questioned when a lookalike hacks her account and posts controversial videos. The YouTuber will then do everything to prove her innocence and try to win back her community. - Dino Doom on Desert Planet by Zsuzsanna Kreif, Balázs Turai and Clare Macdonald (Hungary).
A catastrophic love story between a humanoid slave, Azaz, and a teenage meteor girl, NIKU-278. Using wormholes to spy around the Universe, NIKU notices Azaz and falls fatally in love with him. She changes course and heads straight for Planet Urth, Azaz’s home. Urth is a depleted, desert planet where only a few humans, dinosaurs and cacti remain after a great catastrophe. The tiny civilization is divided into a majority of workers and a minority of rulers. Tensions are ever-present. The love story introduces a touch of romance into a world about to be destroyed. - Hanta by Emilio Ramos (Mexico).
The story about freedom seekers. It is also the story about those who are silenced, imprisoned, and killed. In 1968, the writer Bohumil is censored when he is in the prime of his career. To save himself, he pretends to obey the current government while secretly writing a novel starring Hanta, an old paper presser of censored books. Bohumil's reality and Hanta's fiction intertwine in the midst of a dangerous context for both of them, from which they will only manage to free themselves through death.

Ismaël Joffroy CHANDOUTIS
Director of Deep Fake

After his studies in Belgium and France, at the Higher Institute of Arts (INSAS), the Sint-Lukas Higher Art School and Le Fresnoy ‒ National Studio of Contemporary Arts, Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis develops a "cinématière", an artistic hybrid practice that expands cinema film into the field of contemporary art. His work questions technologies, memory, virtual reality, and explores the porous worlds of the image.
His films have been selected and won awards at numerous international festivals (Cannes, Annecy, Clermont-Ferrand), and been exhibited in prestigious places: the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Cartier Foundation, Paris; Le Fresnoy ‒ National Studio of Contemporary Arts, Tourcoing; La Villette and the City of Science and Industry, Paris; the Pearl Art Museum, Shanghai; the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; and the Museum of Communication, Frankfurt.
In 2021, his film Maalbeek notably received the André-Martin Award for a French Short Film at the Annecy Festival, the Adobe Prize and the Audience Prize at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival, and was nominated for the European Film Awards.
Ismaël is currently developing his first feature film, Deep Fake, selected at the Annecy Festival Residency and at the Critics’ Week Next Step programme at the Cannes Film Festival. -
Zsuzsanna KREIF
Co-director of Dino Doom

I am Zsuzsanna Kreif, freelance animation film director and illustrator based in Budapest, Hungary, a graduate from MOME in 2014. My first animated short film, Limbo-Limbo Travel (2015) was a French-Hungarian co-production, selected for over 100 festivals, including Sundance. The film was also awarded several times and was eligible for the Oscars in 2016. From 2016-2018 I directed the 13-episode animated comedy series Candide with co-directors Balázs Turai and Nándor Bera. The series is a contemporary adaptation of Voltaire’s 18th century novel, a political satire reflecting on controversial phenomena around the world. Some episodes of the series were in competition at Annecy Festival or Slamdance. In 2020, I directed The Health Benefits of Yoga for Ted-Ed, and co-directed Kaleidoo, an animated sci-fi short for FX’s Cake Series together with Réka Bucsi and Balázs Turai. I am currently teaching in the animation department at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

Emilio RAMOS
Director of Hanta

Emilio Ramos started working in animation 20 years ago. He studied Graphic Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and received an MA in Animation from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona in 2006. His graduation film, Fog, was selected at 54 international film and animation festivals (including Annecy 2007), and won 12 prizes and special distinctions. Since 2010, he has directed several animated short films and audiovisual installations for museographic projects. In 2017, his short film Missing won Best Short Documentary in Guanajuato Film Festival, received a Special Mention in Zinebi Film Festival, and was in the Official Selection at Annecy and at the Ottawa Animation Festival. He is currently producing his first animated feature film: Hanta.

Balázs TURAI
Co-director of Dino Doom

I am Balázs Turai, a Hungarian animation designer. I completed a BA at the School of Graphical Research at St. Luc University, Brussels, in 2010, and an MA in Animation Design at MOME, Budapest, in 2012. I created the political web-series "Oligarchia" in 2015, and co-wrote and co-directed an animated series adaptation of Voltaire’s "Candide" between 2015 and 2018, with my colleagues Zsuzsanna Kreif and Nándor Bera. My first short film, "The Fall of Rome" was premiered at Animafest, Zagreb, in 2018. We completed "Kaleidoo", a sci-fi short with Zsuzsanna Kreif and Réka Bucsi in 2020. I am currently working on my second film, "Amok" and teaching Animation Design at a private school in Budapest.
The 2022 mentors
A two-step mentoring was offered to the artists: the first step working on the script remotely, and the second step on-site and focused on the projects’ graphic development. These mentorships are co-designed with the artists themselves, to identify the profiles best adapted to their graphic universes or their technical aspirations.The first assistance provides the chance to question the film’s storyline beforehand, to make some adjustments and fine-tune it to ensure that the artistic work can start.
The second assistance aims to advise and push each artist in their creative process. This stimulation is necessary to explore and draw out maximum benefit from their time at the residency.

Anita Doron
Screenwriter and Director, is assisting the project Hanta.
Biography
Born into a family of engineers and mountaineers from Transcarpathia, Anita Doron is a Canadian-Hungarian Screenwriter and Director. Her films have screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, South by Southwest, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. The Lesser Blessed, which she wrote and directed, received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Anita wrote the Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated screenplay for The Breadwinner, and won a Canadian Screen Award, an Annie Award nomination, and a Humanitas Prize for her work on the film. Anita is a Senior TED Fellow, on an initiative bringing together international visionaries to collaborate in any discipline to create positive change in the world.

Laurent Sarfati
Author, Screenwriter and Writing Director, is assisting the project Dino Doom on Desert Planet
Biography
As Author, Screenwriter, and French Writing Director for cinema, fiction, and animation, Laurent Sarfati has to his credit: the feature film It Had to Be You by Marc Gibaja, the television dramas La Minute blonde, Scènes de ménages and RIS Police scientifique, but also the animated series CO2, Nina Patalo, and Chronokids. Since 2016, a close collaboration with Director Jérémie Périn led him to work on the comic-strip adaptation of Lastman in two successful seasons, and to co-write the deliciously violent series Crisis Jung as well as the long-awaited feature film Mars Express.

Pierre La Police
Artist, is assisting the project Dino Doom on Desert Planet
Biography
Pierre La Police has been working since the early 1990s. An iconoclastic and unclassifiable artist, he calls on irony and science fiction to caricature the failings of mass culture. His work takes many forms and is inspired by the world of comics and contemporary art, granting legitimacy to one and "freeing up" the codes of the other.

Sepideh Farsi
Director, is assisting the project Hanta
Biography
Born in Tehran, Iran, Sepideh Farsi moves to Paris in 1984 to study mathematics. After several years doing photography, she starts making short films and documentaries, which include Harat and Tehran Without Permission (presented at Locarno). Her first feature films Dreams of Dust and The Gaze are selected at Rotterdam, then she directs The House Under the Water (Fipresci Prize at Moscow) and Red Rose (released in France in September 2015). Her documentary 7 Veils wins the Grand Prix at the FID Marseille in 2017. Her latest feature film I Will Cross Tomorrow, shot in Greece and Turkey, is presented at the Thessaloniki Festival in 2019. Sepideh is in the process of finishing her animated feature film The Siren.

Guangli Liu
Producer, is assisting the project Deep Fake
Biography
Guangli Liu was born in 1990 in Lengshuijiang, China. He currently lives and works in Paris. Passionate about technology, Guangli has developed techniques in video, 3D animation and virtual reality. By creating virtual universes, his work tries to question how the computer medium is interlaced with contemporary narration and the reconstruction of our collective memory.
