Young Suzu leaves Hiroshima in 1944 to get married and live with her husband's family in Kure, a military port town. The war makes their living conditions more and more difficult, but despite this fact, the young woman cultivates joy and a zest for life. But in 1945, the bombings put her courage to the test.

    Sunao Katabuchi majored in animation at Nihon University College of Arts and began working as a scriptwriter on Miyazaki's films while still a student after meeting him during a guest lecture at the university. He served as assistant director on "Kiki's Delivery Service", and made his directorial debut with the TV series "Famous Dog Lassie". Further credits include "Princess Arete", Black Lagoon"(2006) and the widely acclaimed "Mai Mai Miracle" (2009).
