    After studies in Painting, Naoko Yamada joined Kyoto Animation instead and started out as an in-betweener. Her directorial debut came with the popular series "K-On!", followed by "Tamako Market" (2013), the prequel series to the feature "Tamako Love Story" (2014), for which she was awarded the New Face Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival. She now describes herself as a "method" director, emphasizing the minds of the characters.
