Theodore Ushev, Mind and Matter
Since moving to Canada in 1999, the Bulgarian-born animation filmmaker Theodore Ushev has made a name for himself around the globe with his powerful animation films, their intensely personal style reflecting numerous influences from the visual arts and literature. A collision of various mediums – painting, collage, photography, live-action film, animation film – and at the nexus of contemporary art, Theodore Ushev’s polymorphous works draw inspiration from a plethora of influences.
The artist incorporates these influences, transforming them to create personal and unusual animation works. Theodore Ushev has achieved international acclaim and his films are regularly selected and awarded at the most prestigious festivals and award ceremonies (Oscars, Canadian Screen Award, Prix Iris, Hiroshima, Ottawa, Zagreb, Montréal, etc.).
He is four-time award winner at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. In 2020, he won the Festival’s highest accolade, the Cristal for a Short Film for The Physics of Sorrow, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The exhibition is a coproduction with the Cinémathèque québécoise along with collaboration from the International Animation Film Festival, the National Film Board of Canada, the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in France and the artist.
Perched up high in the Musée-Château d’Annecy, the "Theodore Ushev, Mind and Matter" exhibition will enchant young and old animation film enthusiasts.
