ANIMA – When Drawing Comes Alive

  1. Overview
  2. Description

Uncover the key role that drawing plays in our worldview and in shaping our imaginations.

So is drawing equal to imagining? Do we seek to portray our world as we see it or do we create the one we wish to see?
Artists have always been poets. They’ve enriched our imaginings with tales of all types. And drawing itself is a full-fledged tale.

Since prehistoric times, drawing – like no other medium – has expressed the spirit of an era with great finesse. In this show we’ll discover its pivotal role in understanding our civilisations and its essential contribution to inventing universes, fuelling our imaginations while providing flights of fancy where reality and fiction are as one. Tales and legends, myths and sagas are all source of inspiration for painters, illustrators, filmmakers and musicians. In our day and times they’ve taken over screens, graphic novels and video games, extending far beyond the simple sheet of paper. Here true poetics is at play, transcending the bounds of times, styles, mediums and hierarchy.

When Émile Reynaud animated drawing in the late 19th century, artists were immediately attracted to its possibilities. A certain Walt Disney turned this into a way of depicting the unreal and stimulating the imagination. At the same time independent artists used animated drawing or moving images to produce different, experimental and fictional works, confirming the strength of the medium and its contribution to contemporary narratives.

You’ll explore this vast and fascinating topic through this event featuring works from the FRAC Picardie and the Claudine et Jean-Marc Salomon collections as well as pieces by independent animation artists in partnership with Galerie MIYU.
