Explore the sensitivity, creativity and potential of creators of projects from emerging countries in animation with the Animation du Monde Pitch Sessions.
Annecy has always sought to spotlight countries with a limited capacity for the production of animation projects. With this in mind, the Animation du Monde Pitch sessions were created in 2015. Due to their success, they have become a category in their own right within the Mifa Pitches for 2016.
Now, writers, animators or filmmakers can submit a short or feature, TV series or transmedia animation project either as a personal piece of work or through a structure put in place in their home country.
This also gives Annecy and the Mifa the opportunity to continue the initiatives set up for young talents by offering them the possibility to acquire funding, co-production deals or work collaborations for their projects, while also giving the creators the chance to take part in an international event they would normally not have access to.
In 2016, these film directors in the making will be given extra support from the AGrAF (les Auteurs groupés de l’animation française). As partners of the Annecy Festival, representatives from the association will be here on behalf of the artists to encourage creation and promote networking and solidarity amongst the professionals.
Three members of the AGrAF (a graphic artist, filmmaker and screenwriter), Caroline Attia, Fernando Lira and Eric Rondeaux, were on the selection committee for the project winners and will give support to the Animation du Monde participants during a writing workshop and help prep them for their public presentations at the Mifa Pitches.
Check out the projects presented in 2015 or come along to the pitches of these animation projects "without borders" at the next Mifa, taking place from Wednesday 15th to Friday 17th June 2016.

The Mifa, the GNFC (Georgian National Film Center) and the Nikozi animation festival launched a call for projects in 2015 that gave young Georgian animators the possibility to participate in a workshop led by the French producer Olivier Catherin in the country’s capital Tbilissi.
Ana Chubinidze was the first-time winner with her short film The Pocket Man. After pitching her project at the Mifa, she was approached by the Folimage studio, which in turn, along with the Georgian company Kvali XXI, brought about the first French-Georgian coproduction.
The success of last year’s project motivated several other Georgian animators to send in their projects in 2016: 17 candidates this year, twice as many as in 2015.
Six of them got the opportunity to take part in the workshop and two received grants to come and participate in the Animation du Monde pitch sessions.
For the second French animation forum in China, a special call for projects was launched for animated Chinese shorts and features.
The Annecy Festival, the French Embassy in China, the Institut Français, East China Normal University, the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the Folimage studio and GOBELINS, l’école de l’image all joined together as partners of the event.
Amongst the 29 projects that were submitted, ten were selected to participate in a two-day workshop with a group dynamic, led by French professionals.
After the workshop, two winners were chosen to pitch their projects at this year’s Animation du Monde session.
As part of the Animation du Monde sessions at the Mifa Pitches, the Peruvian project Nuna: The Last Myth of the Wamani by Jimy Carhuas will take part in the first collaboration developed between CITIA, La Fabrique and l’Institut français.
After his presentation at the Mifa Pitch session in Annecy, the project leader will be coached for 12 months, including a 4-8-week design/development residency at La Fabrique (Cévennes National Park), then the project will be taken to the Cannes Festival in May 2017 for the “La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde” programme from l’Institut français.
The Kenyan project Zahrah the Windseeker by Wanuri Kahiu and Nnedi Okorafor will also receive support as part of the Animation du Monde showcase.
